As an Osakan (a person from Osaka), there is a built-in love of takoyaki - the balls of dough with a chunk of octopus in it. It's on the membership card.
Outside of Osaka, a good takoyaki is rarely found (unless it is in a home kitchen). But every once in a while we get lucky.
There is a little shop in Ekoda that serves takoyaki. My husband was super excited to see that an Osakan man was running the shop. We tried his little balls of goodness and they were, in fact, delicious.
Not only does he make authentic takoyaki, he also makes a variation known as takosen. Take two takoyaki and stick it between two shrimp flavored crackers along with a bit of sauce, mayonnaise, and tempura bits.
Takosen is nostalgic for us. We used to eat it in Osaka all the time when we lived there. Our son also loves this tasty treat!
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
