We started today with a visit to the Toshimaen movie theater. Toy Story 4 came out yesterday and we wanted to take our son. Okay, my husband and I also wanted to see it because we have been fans of the series since the first movie was released in 1995. But, it is always nice to blame the kid when you want to see a kid's movie. We chose to go to the 9:30 am showing so we could see it in English. We were not disappointed whatsoever, although my son shed lots of tears during the show as some of the storyline really resonated with him (and then I started crying because he was crying).
After a great movie and a good cry, it was time for lunch. We hopped on our bikes and rode a short distance down the street to Good Munchies for a burger. I'm still on the search for my favorite burger place near me. There aren't too many, but since I don't go out for burgers often, it is taking a while to find my favorite place in Nerima. My husband had gone to the ramen place next door and when he noticed Good Munchies, he thought we should check it out together.
It is a tiny restaurant with only 8 seats inside. We noticed right away that many orders were going out using Uber Eats, a very popular restaurant delivery service. Luckily, the one table in the restaurant opened up shortly after we arrived. We sat down and took in everything on the menu.
I ordered an avocado burger, while my husband got the teriyaki burger. There isn't a kids menu, so we ordered a regular burger for our son. We also purchased the onion ring and fry plate.
While waiting for our food, my son enjoyed watching the food being cooked. Any time he is able to watch the kitchen, he's a happy camper.
Our fry plate arrived first. We were a touch disappointed because the server hadn't asked us if we wanted julienned fries or wedge cut, and had just given us wedge cut. In her defense, we didn't realize we needed to specify and didn't notice the huge photo next to the text. The wedges were just fine. They just weren't what we wanted. On the bright side, the restaurant had yellow mustard for dipping, which is a rarity in Japan. Most burger places only offer ketchup.
Our burgers were exactly what we wanted. Big, juicy, stacked with lettuce and tomato, they were a sight to behold. Luckily there are always paper wrappers for the burgers on the table to hold the burger together and catch all the juice. Without them, the burgers would be a huge mess.
While my son is used to eating "normal adult food" (aka not just mac & cheese, burgers, and plain pizza), he wasn't prepared for the copious quantities of pepper on his burger. While mine was also over seasoned, it didn't bother my mouth as much as it did his.
Overall, we had a good experience at Good Munchies, but we learned we need to be very specific about what we want and how we want it. I could see us going back to this place after another early morning movie adventure.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
