Fresh air

There are a lot of benefits to getting into nature.  Forest bathing, or shinrin yoku, is known to reduce stress, boost immunity, and improve sleep - very important things as the world combats Covid-19.  So I was not the least bit surprised to see a virologist on NHK (the major news network in Japan with English broadcasts) pointedly stated the outdoors, including parks, are safe to visit during the outbreak.

I quickly resolved to take my son into nature.  But then I realized, I don't have a car.  How was I going to get him into the woods if I was avoiding the train?  Of course,  I had the option of taking him to Hikarigaoka Park.  But thousands and thousands of other people had the exact same idea, especially after the schools closed.

It didn't matter very much this week anyway.  I had a very long task list to get through.  When my son's school went to half days starting on Wednesday, I just dragged him along for the ride.  After making him go shopping for a new suit, additional mask fabric, and yeast, I knew he needed a break.

As I biked home, I spotted a small park.  Remembering the virologist's recommendation, I pulled over and let him play for an hour.  It was so needed.  If I had been in a car, I probably would not have stopped because it is such a hassle to find a parking space, help my son get out of his car seat, and so forth.  But on the bike, it is super easy.

He played for about an hour.  I loved hearing him laugh as he ran, jumped, climbed, and slide around the park.

It was fine that we weren't actually in nature.  He still got a lot of health benefits being at the little park right next to the train tracks.  He got a dose of Vitamin D and a bit of cardiovascular exercise.  I got a bit too, just not as much as him.

When it was time to leave the park, I gave our hands a quick spray of hand sanitizer before hopping on the bike and riding home.

I'm just following directions.  If those directions align with my desires, then all the better.

Earlier this year my husband applied for a new job. As usual, I encouraged him as he went through the interview process. It was a long, draw...
