Since our son first started at kindergarten, we have been ordering photos of various events at school. Every month or two we get an email notifying us that photos are available for review and purchase via a website. Over time I bought a stack of photos, all of my kid being adorable and doing fun activities.
I kept being told that we would be making a scrapbook before our children graduated. The time finally arrived to put all those photos to use. With just under 2 weeks left of school, I was told to pick up the album. We were going to have scrapbooking gatherings at the school, but they've all been cancelled due to Covid-19. So, I've been left to my own devices to create a scrapbook for my son.
I'm not new to scrapbooking. It used to be a hobby for me (now I just create books online). I made so many books over the years.
That said, I can't even tell you the last time I even saw a photo album with "magnetic pages" (also known as pages with a clear plastic overlay that self-adheres to the page). But that is exactly what was handed to me the other day. I'm doing my best not to roll my eyes at how dated this style of book is.
The school had each of the children decorate the cover, so it came with an original design on the front. It is my favorite part.
Since I left all my scrapbooking supplies in the US, I had to run to the store to get a straight edge cutter and a corner rounder. I then got busy cutting photos and placing them into the album.
I've never heard of a school doing scrapbooks like this. It is so much more personal than any yearbook I ever purchased. Even if it is dated, I know my son will love it.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
