Since my first visit to my son's school, I have been impressed with the fruit and vegetables growing in the playground. All around the perimeter there are large pots filled with dirt and vegetation. The plants aren't only growing in pots, there are also several fruit trees in the play yard, too.

The blue pot contains satoimo, aka taro. |

Tomatoes and soybeans (edamame). |

Grapes. |
|
Biwa trees, aka loquat. |
One day, a while back, my son came home and informed us his class would be planting tomatoes! Although he has planted many tomatoes over the years, he was excited to do this with his new friends at school.
It is pretty standard for kindergartens and elementary schools to grow things in Japan. Seeing things grow is such an important lesson for children - especially food! I just absolutely love that it is a valued lesson here.

Eggplant! |
Since the first planting activity, our son's class has been able to dine on cabbage, eggplants, and cucumbers grown in the school yard. He's always so excited to come home and tell me about the vegetables that he ate at school.
