There are certain things that don't have borders. They are done in a similar fashion anywhere around the world. Yesterday, my son came home from school with a fever. I spent the afternoon tending to him and caring for him. Last night he went to the hospital to get medicine with his dad while I cooked soup at home. Because I am the only person in our home that has not come down with a fever, my son and husband slept in our room as I slept on the couch. My son offered me his bed, but I declined since he still sleeps on a crib mattress.
He came to me this morning. With tears in his eyes, he said "Momma, I want breakfast. Can you get me apple with peanut butter?" I quickly rose and obliged his request. He also ate an oatmeal muffin before he had a fever reducing medicine. He was so hot to the touch, but alert and happy. When he was done eating, we cuddled up on the couch to watch Shaun the Sheep.
We spent the day on the couch. I'd get up to give him some juice or a fresh tissue for his runny nose. He mostly laid there, watching tv and periodically falling asleep for short stints. He didn't want me to leave his side, so I read for most of the day.
I did one load of laundry, but otherwise did not do any chores. My chore was tending to my sick son.
I didn't have a "Japanese experience" today, except that I can't imagine a Japanese mom would have taken care of her child any differently.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
