A new Olympics games has officially begun. I love watching the opening ceremonies. Last time, we had friends over and enjoyed a festive evening together. This year, my family watched it together sans friends. My son only made it about 30 minutes before falling asleep. But he enjoyed what he did see. It was, after all, way after his usual bedtime.
We cheer for two countries in our household. We're excited to see the various events over the next two weeks.
I asked some of the moms at the park today. It sounds like there aren't usually Olympic viewing parties at people's homes in Japan. It is actually very rare to host people in your home, because homes are so small. So, most families watch by themselves. Some people go out to bars or certain restaurants to watch with other people. I wonder if this will be the way to see most of the summer Olympics in 2020 that will be held in Tokyo.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
