You know you're avoiding the world when you look forward to locking yourself in your bedroom to do your taxes.
Today, my husband and son hung out together while I stayed up in my bedroom gathering information and entering numbers into a database for our tax expert. The US is one out of only a handful of countries that grants expats the honor of being double taxed. That's right, we earn once and pay twice.
It is at times like these that I am so grateful for technology! With just a couple logins and passwords, I am able to access or request all our tax forms! Back when I lived here in 2002, my mom did my taxes for me and submitted them on my behalf! While, of course, I'd love to have her free services once again, I am grateful for the ease of modern technology. (And since my taxes are much more complicated nowadays, I'm sure she is more than happy not to be doing them anymore.)
I'm almost done. Just waiting on one more form. It doesn't really matter when I get it either, as non-residents get an extra 45 days to submit their tax forms. Of course, we have to notify the government that we are expats, but it is available to us nonetheless.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
