After several visitors and general schedule craziness, the house was silent today. I got up and took my son to school. When I returned, the silence was deafening.
But I wasn't alone for long. My New Zealander friend popped by to pick up the loaf of gluten free bread I had picked up for her at Where is a Dog? We sat and talked about how lonely it can be living in a foreign country. We also talked about several things we could do to increase our happiness. As women, we both felt that having a strong community and friend circle was key.
At the end of the conversation, we vowed to be there for each other and challenged each other to work hard to seek happiness during these trying times.
If you have any tips on getting happy during times of difficulty, please share in the comments below!
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
