The golden arches are a little different here

I'm just going to start by saying I am not a fan of McDonald's.  Maybe it is knowing about "pink slime."  Maybe it was hearing too many horror stories of employees doing disgusting things to the food.  Or maybe it is just because I don't like the food.  At any rate, I haven't been a fan for a very long time.

No matter my feelings, people are very intrigued by McDonalds in foreign countries.  It is the same, yet different, in locations around the world.  Since there is a McD's near the train station, I thought I'd share what is currently on the menu.

When I lived in Osaka 15 years ago, I quickly learned that the correct pronunciation is "Mac-don-all-dough-z" in Japanese.  If you ask someone where McDonald's is, they will look at you with a quizzical glace before walking away.  The "mispronunciation" does not translate.  My students at the time loved to try to say it in English, because it was such an American thing to say.  Another important term to know is a Happy Meal is called a Happy Set.  With this difference, a foreigner might be confused when someone mentions a Happy Set, but if ordering a cashier would probably know the difference.

There are the regular burgers (Big Mac in upper left corner), chicken sandwiches, and fish burgers (Filet-o-fish in lower right corner).  But there are special burgers too, like the teriyaki burger (right side center) and ginger soy sauce burger (second from left on the top row).  You couldn't pay me to eat the fried shrimp sandwich (second from left on the bottom row) - and I like shrimp.

As part of a value meal, you can choose between fries, chicken nuggets, salad, or corn as a side.  Or you can order from the a la carte menu.

I don't know who came up with eggs on burgers, but there are very popular here - especially at McDonalds.

If you are in the neighborhood and want to try something familiar or new, rest easy.  It isn't a daunting task.  When ordering, there is a printed menu on the counter, so if needed, a patron can point to what they want.

And if you so desire, you can have it delivered for only ¥500 ($4.55 USD).  It will arrive in via a motorcycle!  (See photo here.)

The time has come to say goodbye

Earlier this year my husband applied for a new job. As usual, I encouraged him as he went through the interview process. It was a long, draw...
