Mister Donut

With more than 1,300 stores, Mister Donut is part of the Japanese food culture.  They are very popular, comparable to Dunkin Donuts in the US.  Even if you don't have one very close, it is most popular brand of donuts here.  It was founded in the US in 1955 and came to Japan in 1971.  Mister Donut is now headquartered in Osaka.  And according to my research, there is only one store still open in the US - in Godfrey, IL.

My family has been known to visit a Mister Donut periodically.  In my opinion, they are not the best donuts in the world (that title belongs to Mighty O Donuts in Seattle), but they are comforting and hit the spot when needed.

They are most well known for their crullers, which is funny since we never get them!
I almost always get a pon de ring.  It's a little chewy but still very soft.
Donut holes are popular all around the world.

Even though they aren't the best donuts, one thing that keeps bringing us back is their special creations for holidays.  They are just so darn cute!  Just the smallest decoration makes my son super excited.

This Halloween donut was a huge hit.

Recently, Mister Donuts has been offering more "breakfast" items beyond donuts.  Donut sandwiches are very popular.  I have not tried one.  I just can't bring myself to do it.  Nothing says good morning like adding ham and eggs to your donut!

Although most people don't think of donuts as part of Japanese cuisine, this shop is a household name here.
