After a long day of getting stuff done, my husband met a coworker at the local onsen. While most American's would shy away from meeting someone you work with at a bathhouse, it is quite common in Japan. I hear they had a very nice talk and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the onsen.
My son and I stayed home and watched Ratatouille, the Disney movie about the rat chef. About halfway through the movie, my phone suddenly rang. It was my husband, sheepishly asking if our son was already asleep. When I informed him that our son was still away, he breathed a sigh of relief. He had lost his bike key somewhere and needed us to rescue him.
Luckily, we have a spare that we could bring to him. It was a cold 4°C (39°F), so I bundled my son up in multiple layers. Riding a bike in cold temperatures is bone chilling! I've learned the trick of wrapping my son in a windproof blanket while buckled safely in his seat on the back of my bike to help keep him warm. Although he doesn't have anything on his head besides a helmet, he does all right since his body isn't also being hit with the cold air. Tonight, I also wrapped my scarf around his neck and nose.
After getting settled in his seat, he realized he looked a bit like a ninja with the scarf hiding his face. As I pedaled my way to the onsen, he declared I was a samurai and he was a ninja and we were on a special mission together. I listened to him and played along for a while, even when I realized what he was saying really was true! My husband is always helping me out. I text him with questions and call him to talk to someone I am having trouble communicating with at least once a week. He is always coming to the rescue of the damsel in distress. For once, I was the one rescuing him! And (although I really didn't want to go out in the cold) it felt so good!
We rode quickly and got there in about 10 minutes. We gave him the spare key and quickly headed back towards home together. We headed through the park, as it was the fastest way to get home. When suddenly, we noticed the super moon, close to the horizon. It was so big and yellow, such a sight to see. We stopped for a moment to take in the sight and enjoy the gift of it. If it had not been for our mission, we wouldn't have taken the time to go outside and enjoy it!
Why is it that photos of the moon never do it justice? |
After returning home, we removed all our layers and began to get warmed up. Suddenly, my husband burst out laughing as he pulled his key out of his bag. He had put it in a pocket he doesn't usually use. We got a good chuckle out of his oversight. It doesn't matter that our rescue mission was pointless, we were there when he needed us. And that is what family is all about - being there for each other.
