Yushima Tenmangu

February is a time of high stress for many students.  They are heads down, focusing on passing entrance exams for high school and junior high school.  For the most part, if your family doesn't have someone going through this, you don't know it is even happening.  The only time you really see something is different is when you visit particular shrines.  Shrines housing the Kami (god) of Learning are very popular this time of year.

We stopped by Yushima Tenmangu, a beautiful shrine in Ueno known for their plum blossoms.  Of course, I wanted to see the pretty trees.

The gold accented shrine is a sight to see.  It was even more eye catching surrounded by the plum blossoms in full bloom.

The crowd was disproportionately students, coming to pray for success in passing their entrance exams.  Many of them purchase Ema (illustrated wooden plaques given as offerings with a wish written on them) and hang them on dedicated frames.  Although I have noticed the influx of Ema at this time, I have never seen more at one place.

My son saw how many Ema were hanging and said "I think they didn't clean last night."

We made sure to stop by the large cow bronze sculpture.  It is believed that if you rub its head and horns, it will grant you wisdom - perfect for those wanting to pass an entrance exam!

We wanted our son to rub it so he will be wise as he starts elementary school.  Can't blame us for trying.  After all, every little bit helps.
