My son is a stickler for safety. He likes to know we are prepared for emergencies. I don't know where his disaster preparedness enthusiasm comes from, but I am compliant in his preference.
After moving here, we purchased an emergency kit that comes in a backpack. It came with all sorts of great tools that we would utilize in an emergency. We topped it off with shelf-stable, easy to open, and heat not required foods, before sticking it into the closet near the door.
A year and a half later, as well as knowing a typhoon is on its way, it is time to go through the kit and revamp as needed. I first checked all the dates on the food and water stored in the bag. Looks like I will be going to the store to replace the crackers, tuna, and a couple bottles of water.
I also checked all the stuff inside to make sure there wasn't any broken items or things that needed to be replaced. I'm happy to report everything checked out just fine.
Finally, I reviewed our list of things I was going to add to the kit but forgot about. Now is better than too late, so I grabbed several of the items from around the house that I had been intending on sticking in there, including slippers, batteries, hand towels, toiletries (toothbrushes and toothpaste), and cash (specifically coins). At this point, if we decide we need anything more, we will have to make a second bag.
It is good to go through your emergency kit once in a while. Just review and update as needed.
I have one thing left to do before I really feel fully prepared and that is to take photocopies of all our passports, as well as write down various emergency contact numbers.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
