I can hardly believe it, but it is almost time to plant the spring garden! This year I have decided to follow a gardening calendar based on region. According to the calendar, I am supposed to get the tomatoes into the ground as early as February 20! This is completely against everything I know. But after an extremely lackluster crop last year, I will follow their instructions.
I started seeds several weeks ago in my washing room. My husband bought me a heat mat for germination that really helped save the little plants when we had a super cold snap two weeks ago. Today they spent the afternoon outside in the sunshine.
It was such a beautiful day, that my son and I headed over to the garden to remove weeds and take an assessment of the state of the dirt.
There were quite a few weeds. So, my son dug a deep hole for us to bury them in. He was very entertained by sticking the shovel into the dirt so deep he could jump on the handle and hold himself into the air. He also liked stomping on the weeds before piling the dirt back on them.
While digging in one corner of the pea patch, I found potatoes that I forgot I had planted. It was a wonderful discovery that my son and I had so much fun unearthing. There were more than enough potatoes for a couple meals and I don't think we found all of them.
We also pulled a lot of turnips. We only pulled half of what was there. It is still cold enough to keep them snug in the dirt for at least another short while. Perhaps I was a bit overzealous when I planted them. I'll have to crack open the cookbooks to find more turnip recipes. Tonight I chopped them up and tossed them into my kimchee pork stir-fry.
It felt great to get my hands dirty. The spring-like day felt even better. I'm so excited to watch everything grow and produce this year.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
