I cannot believe I have written 400 posts about Japan and my life here. I still shake my head realizing how long I have been here.
Life is quite different for me in Japan versus America. Even though daily life is getting easier, I still find interesting things at every turn. I'm still constantly learning new things here - about the culture, and history, and daily workings. There are still so many rules I have yet to figure out regarding etiquette and proper behavior.
For the most part, I have a lot of fun. I love Japan on many levels. It is filled with so many traditions, unlike what we have in the US. I have never felt very connected to American history. While I enjoy history museums and so forth, it isn't the same. America is so young compared to the rest of the world. I relish walking around historical sites all over Japan.
There are still a lot of struggles for me, too. I am very lonely for deep conversations. I don't have my fall back outlets for stress. And I still get caught up and very frustrated with racial stereotyping. Life is definitely not perfect here.
It is now autumn and I am anxious to see all the fall colors. It is one of my favorite seasons here, because the colors are so vibrant. I hope you are enjoying this journey along with me. It is definitely a roller coaster!
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
