A few months ago, a little area in Nerima called Nerima's Ginza or Nerigin for short, was going to hold an outdoor dining event. Unfortunately, a typhoon blew through and the event was cancelled. But the restaurants came back together and decided to hold it tonight.
It was the perfect evening for dining outside. The temperature was perfect. The humidity under control.
We travelled to Nerigin by bus, which is my son's favorite way to travel these days. He grew tired of the subway system a long time ago. Any time he can be above ground, he is a much happier camper.
Nerigin is just a couple blocks from the train station and bus terminal. We wandered over to find the street blocked off. Several restaurants and shops had little tables out front where they offered little bites of various dishes for small prices.
We bought tuna sashimi, fish cake, and eel on a stick from a fish shop. Then we picked up a Korean pancake (pajeon) at the Korean restaurant. Finally, we grabbed gyoza (potstickers), karrage (fried chicken), and shumai (steamed dumplings) from a Chinese restaurant. My husband also got a free beer to enjoy with our dinner. He downloaded an app and received a free drink for his effort.
We found a table along the street and sat down to enjoy our eclectic dinner. There were a couple clowns wandering around providing entertainment. I'm not sure how they fit into the picture, but it was fun nonetheless. My son loved receiving a balloon animal. They never fail to entertain.
It wasn't a huge event, but reminded me of many fun evenings in Seattle's International District. We would often ride the bus up and enjoy their monthly Happy Hour Food Walk. We found many new restaurants to try while enjoying these evenings on the town.
I would make the trip over to eat at the Korean restaurant. The pajeon was full of vegetables, and not at all greasy. Plus their chili sauce that we put on top was delightful. I went back to buy some kim chee that we will enjoy later in the week with one of my favorite quick dinners.
After a week spent on the couch trying to feel better with this stinking back injury, it was a lovely time out with my boys. Everyone had a good time exploring a new area - even if all we did was eat.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
