Dealing with jet lag can be a real challenge. I have never really figured out a perfect solution for coping. Instead I just walk around like a zombie for a couple days until my body adjusts.
When we fly from the US to Japan, I get really sleepy about 3 pm. From the afternoon on, I struggle to stay awake. Staying up to make dinner isn't an issue, but as soon as I sit... Oh, I just want sleep!
I was so happy when our son slept until 6:30 am. When we moved here, he went through a phase of waking up at 3! That was super brutal. Some people prefer to go to work or school the day after arriving to help adjust to the time zone, but I am not a fan of that.
Before we left, we tried to finish most of the food in the house. So, we filled the day with playing at the park (my husband and son went over to the playground at 8:30 this morning) and errands. We bought groceries to restock on staples like rice, yogurt, and eggs. We also stocked up on fruit and vegetables.
We don't typically have two days of rest upon returning, so we will take full advantage of having an extra day of rest tomorrow. Until then, I will fight to stay awake for at least another hour.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
