To say that I was disappointed by my visit to Sanrio Puroland would be pretty accurate. However, there was one highlight to the day. As usual, we found the cutest food they offered and indulged in that.
The Character Food Court mainly offers a selection of curries and ramen modelled to look like Hello Kitty and friends. They also offer a smaller selection of other options like hamburgers, gratin, and salad.
My son picked the Hello Kitty "Nutritious Curry" for his lunch. It is considered nutritious because it includes a floret of broccoli and a slice of carrot. His meal was unbelievably cute. I was impressed with the attention to detail. Hello Kitty had a ham bow and her face was imprinted on the croquette and mini sausage. The flavor was very mild, basically what you would expect a kid's curry to taste like.
My husband was a bit more adventurous and ordered the Goodnight Cinnamon Dreamy Curry. The curry sauce was a shocking greenish blue. The fluffy clouds were made with hanpen (a very soft fishcake made from ground cod that is formed into squares and boiled) and Cinnamon's paws were mini mozzarella balls. While the curry's color was a bit disturbing (how did they make it that vibrant?), it tasted like any other fast food curry. He kept having to reassess what he was eating because what he saw going into his mouth was not matching what his taste buds were experiencing.
I chose to eat ramen for lunch. It featured a piece of nori (dried, flattened seaweed) printed with Hello Kitty's face. There were two pieces of fishcake - one was Hello Kitty's face and the other was a large square with her face imprinted on it. These small touches took the ramen from an average lunch to a kawaii (cute) meal. Once again, the taste was not spectacular, but I wasn't expecting it to be. We bought it because it was adorable and filling.
There were other restaurants at Sanrio Puroland, but we were not interested in a buffet or a sit down meal. There is a second quick service restaurant and we saved that one for dessert. We enjoyed a sweet snack of crepes, a very popular treat in Japan.
The three of us shared two crepes - a strawberry chocolate Hello Kitty crepe and a mango Gudetama (a lazy egg character) crepe.
The food was really fun. It was honestly the highlight of the day. I don't know why I enjoy the cute food so much, but I really do get a kick out of it.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
