Be thankful

When my husband spent his first Thanksgiving with my family, someone asked him if Japanese people eat turkey on Thanksgiving.  Taken a little bit aback, he replied  "little island, big bird, doesn't fit."  This person persisted and asked "so what do Japanese people eat on Thanksgiving?"  Without missing a beat, my husband replied "little island, pilgrims couldn't find it, no Thanksgiving."

Thanksgiving isn't a holiday here.  But it doesn't mean it isn't non-existent.  I did see turkeys at Costco and I bought fresh cranberries there.  It can happen if someone is dedicated enough.  When I think of Thanksgiving, I don't think about pilgrims and Native Americans (the history is pretty horrific if you learn what really happened).  Instead, I think of time with family and a special feast.

So, my Thanksgiving looked a bit different.  My husband worked from home, so he was able to take our son to school in the morning.  After school, my son and I hung out at the park with friends until my husband was done working.  Then we went out and had sushi for dinner.  It was a day of rest (since I didn't cook!) and time spent with friends and family (my little nuclear one, not the extended one).  And isn't time with the ones you love what holidays are really about?

Even though the pilgrims never made it this far, other seasonal traditions have made it.  The tradition of Black Friday has crossed the Pacific and is really popular here.  There were lots of  sales promoted on this day after... not-Thanksgiving.  We went over to the local shopping center to pick up some deals on clothes, shoes, and even a suitcase.  (My husband didn't have to work and my son didn't have school because it actually is a national holiday on 11/23 - Labor Thanksgiving Day.)  There were lots of deals to be had, but we restrained ourselves and didn't go overboard.  Funny thing is that many Black Friday deals aren't limited to Black Friday.  Once again, they got the concept, but it is just a little off.

It was nice spending these holidays together, even if they were a little different than how we've always celebrated them in the US.

The time has come to say goodbye

Earlier this year my husband applied for a new job. As usual, I encouraged him as he went through the interview process. It was a long, draw...
