Crochet project

A while ago I was looking for something to do with my hands while my son was running around at the park.  He plays with the other kids or by himself quite nicely these days and doesn't need me to follow him like when he was younger.  He sometimes asks for me or one of the other moms to help him with something (climbing a tree or tying off a water balloon), those requests are becoming fewer and fewer.

I don't feel comfortable reading while sitting with a group of people.  It seems rude and purposefully excluding myself.  But it can be hard to simply sit there while the other moms are chatting in Japanese and I really have no clue what they are talking about - especially if they are discussing pop culture.  I don't know who is who in the Japanese music scene or movie scene.

About a month and a half ago, one of the other moms was crocheting a hat.  I complimented her work.  She replied that it was so easy and she'd be happy to teach me.  I took her up on her offer.

Some of the other moms were making hats as well, so we made a group order of yarn (an interesting paper-type yarn - raffia!) and picked up crochet hooks at Daiso, the ¥100 store.  A quick lesson and we were on our way.

I found the crocheting to go very fast.  I would often loose count, but soon found a system to keep track of my stiches.  Soon I was going to town, working on the hat at the park and while relaxing in the evening.  I found it to be such a fun way to pass the time.

At one point I got so excited, I actually broke my hook!

Soon, my son began encouraging me.  He would often tell me I was doing a good job and he looked forward to all the trying on of the hat to make sure the size was right.

It took me just over a month, but I was able to complete the hat.  There are several little imperfections, also known as character.  He's already worn the hat.  On a blustery day, he requested I add an elastic string to go under his chin so it couldn't blow off.  I will do that soon.

As if I didn't have enough little projects,  I'm enjoying this new one.  So much in fact that I've already started a hat for myself.

The time has come to say goodbye

Earlier this year my husband applied for a new job. As usual, I encouraged him as he went through the interview process. It was a long, draw...
