Sushi never gets old

We used to laugh at how my son always wanted to eat sushi in the states.  He knew where a couple sushi restaurants were and would beg to go eat at them whenever spotted.  Since moving to Japan, we have made the habit of going to my son's favorite sushi restaurant (the one with the Shinkansen that delivers your orders) every couple of weeks.

Tonight, we needed to get a couple things from Daiso (the ¥100 shop) and then decided to go out for dinner.  Of course, our son wanted to go for sushi.  I suggested we try a new place.  So, we decided to go to a new sushi restaurant.

When we arrived, we were told that there was an hour wait.  Wow!  This place was popular!  While standing outside and discussing where else we could go, the host came outside and announced there were seats at the bar available.  We didn't even have to ask each other, we volunteered to take the seats at the bar.  At kaiten sushi, the bar means you are facing the conveyor belt versus sitting in a booth.  Since there are only 3 of us, the bar is perfectly fine with us.

The set up was similar to most kaiten sushi restaurants.  There is a conveyor belt with various types of delights going around the restaurant.  There is a screen, similar in size to an iPad, at each table that allows you to order anything from the menu.  While some restaurants have a server bring your orders to the table, others offer cute alternatives.  I've been to places that have boats travel down a little water way to you!  This place had little red or brown dishes that would carry your request down the same conveyor belt.  When it was almost to you, the screen would light up and notify you of the impending arrival.  That way you were sure to grab what you ordered and not someone else's food.

We enjoyed many new things.  It was really nice to have the same raw fish prepared in a different way.

Raw octopus with shiso
Marinated tuna with soft boiled egg on top
Sushi roll!
Kinmedai or red bream

We challenged each other to try one thing that seems super strange to us.  When we spotted salmon with camembert cheese on top, we knew we had found our challenge food.  Such a weird combination.  Then we saw they also had eel with camembert on it!  We placed our order on our little screen and waited.

After it arrived, we smiled and dug in.  It wasn't a completely unexpected taste.  But it wasn't very good.  We had a sinking feeling that everyone in the kitchen was in shock someone actually ordered these items.  We won't be ordering them again.

There were lots of strange items that we did like.  Marinated soft boiled egg sushi?  Delicious!  Omurice (omelet rice) sushi?  Our son liked it!

It is so much fun to discover new restaurants.  My husband and I were pleasantly surprised and decided we had found a second sushi restaurant.  However, our son told us emphatically that he prefers the Shinkansen restaurant.

The time has come to say goodbye

Earlier this year my husband applied for a new job. As usual, I encouraged him as he went through the interview process. It was a long, draw...
