Since I live in the suburbs, there is a bit more space here for bicycle parking. Around the station there is a two story building for bicycle parking (all monthly rentals) as well as lots of street level parking around. However, when you get further into downtown, there is less space. So, people have gotten inventive.
My favorite is the totally automatic bike parking. A person puts their bike onto a loading dock. The machine takes it inside (where people can't go) and gives a ticket to the bike owner. The machine automatically stores it within the labyrinth inside.
When it's time to get your bike, the ticket is used like any parking garage, it tells the machine how much you need to pay in order to get your bike back.
It is a super simple system, desperately needed in a biking society, that is so interesting to those that don't have anything like it where they live.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
