Last year we were scheduled to go to a lantern release festival. Strong winds made the planners cancel the event. We were sad, because we had really built it up in our minds. When the festival came around again this year, we were all very excited.
My husband stopped by the event early to make sure they wouldn't run out of lanterns. When he signed up, he was informed that they weren't releasing lanterns this year. Instead, we would be given a balloon with an LED light.
While the excitement waned just a bit, we were still wanting to go. We bundled up because it is very cold outside and headed to Hikarigaoka Park. At the park we purchased a mylar balloon that our son was able to decorate.
It was at that moment that my heart jumped into my throat. We aren't going to release these balloons into the sky, are we? Thankfully the answer was no. But it really freaked me out for a moment.
When we were getting our balloons filled up, we learned that there was going to be a sing-along. This whole thing was getting weird.
We held on tightly to the ring as we released the string attached to the balloon. Soon the "band" started playing. The "band" included a guitarist, a bass player, and three karaoke singers that didn't know the words to the songs.
The wind was blowing quite a bit, so our balloons didn't go very high. One man walked between the stage and the benches and walked right into a string.
I could go on, but honestly the event was a pretty big disappointment. It wasn't very well planned and there were lots of weird moments and hiccups. Plus, we froze our bums off.
It wasn't a wasted night. We still spent it together, and that was the best part.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
