If it seems like I am on the quest to find not only a decent burger, but an excellent one, here in Tokyo, your assumption would be correct.
While in Harajuku, we wandered the back streets to seek out The Great Burger. My husband found it on Google. It was a gamble for us since we didn't have a recommendation. We walked toward the building at 2:30 in the afternoon, and there was a line. This is Tokyo after all. Tokyoites love their lines. In fact, there was also a line for a milk tea place on a different street that was 2 blocks long! At least this line was only 6 groups in front of us for burgers.
My husband, who hates lines, had me peek at the menu before we waited too long. As soon as I peeked through the window, I didn't need to peruse the menu. The food looked amazing.
We didn't wait super long because the restaurant was really organized. They took our order while we waited in line and turned over the tables very quickly.
Inside the restaurant, it did not feel like we were in Tokyo. They had an amazing collection of Americana - photos, a rotary dial Pacific Bell phone, fun signs in English, and even mail bin boxes to put your bag in while you dine. The feeling was high energy, but laid back. And it was fun.
The food arrived pretty fast. Our eyes were huge, eager to dive into our meals.
My son ordered a hamburger. It was a lovely deluxe burger which included a slightly spicy sauce on top. We ended up taking off the top bun and scrapping the sauce because it was too hot for him. Once that was discarded, he gobbled up the remaining food and cleaned his plate.
My husband and I shared a mushroom mozzarella burger and a corned beef sandwich (celebrating the Irish). Both were absolutely delicious. Someone obviously did their research and followed a passion in creating this restaurant and menu. You taste it in the food.
The Great Burger is a hidden gem in Harajuku. Well, maybe it was just previously hidden from me. I definitely think we will be back to try other things on the menu - like the amazing looking salads, and maybe even the pancakes that seem totally random on a burger joint's menu. But at least one person will always need to order a burger, because they are delicious here.
In 2017 my family headed to Tokyo. My husband had a new job and my son and I came along for the ride. This move was my second move to Japan - the first was for a year in 2002. At that time I was a single, recent college graduate. Moving abroad as a family was a whole different ball of wax. As I live this crazy life in Japan, I track our adventures and my observations, creating an unofficial guidebook to the city.
