Japan is still full of little shops all over. Each one specializes in selling one particular thing. Although it is more work for the patron to visit lots of shops, I am so happy to go to stores where people know everything about their products and are experts in their industry.
I go to the organic produce shop almost weekly. When I don't go, I really miss the quality of their produce. Once thing I've noticed is that Papa-san (as the park moms all call him) doesn't always have everything. He only carries it if it is the best quality. When he was closed over new years, and I had to buy my fruit and vegetables at the regular store, I noticed a big difference in the taste. I was so relieved when he reopened. I bought two huge bags of produce.
I have recently started going to a butcher shop as well. The first time I went, I got a little crush on the little old butcher. I know it is romantic, but I just imagine him dedicating his life to a craft. I could tell he has done this his entire life. Since we really don't communicate beyond "500 grams of shabu-shabu onaigaishimasu," everything I think is totally made up.
I don't know why I get so impressed with shops for tofu or pickled vegetables or fresh produce or meat. I just feel like I am supporting a person or family instead of a chain of businesses. I've always been a huge supporter of local businesses. It's nice to see that so many are still thriving here.
